You do not need to be a CAD expert to get a good quote. You just need to send the right kind of file for the kind of part you want. This guide keeps it simple.
The formats we accept
You can upload any of these on the quote page, up to 25 MB per file:
- 3D solidsSTEP (.step / .stp), IGES (.iges / .igs), SOLIDWORKS (.sldprt), STL
- 2D flat partsDXF, DWG, AI, EPS
- DrawingsPDF
- BundlesZIP for assemblies and multiple files
Which format for which job
| You want | Send this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| CNC machined part | STEP (best) or STL | Carries exact 3D geometry. STEP gives an instant price and 3D preview. |
| Laser-cut flat part | DXF or DWG | 2D outline is all the laser needs. Fast, cheap, accurate. |
| Bent sheet metal part | STEP, or flat DXF plus a drawing | We need bend directions and angles as well as the outline. |
| Quick prototype | STL | Good enough to check fit and get a fast estimate. |
| Tolerances or threads specified | Add a PDF drawing | 3D files do not always carry tolerances, threads, or finish notes. |

Get an instant quoteHow to export a clean STEP
Almost every CAD program exports STEP. In your software choose File, then Save As or Export, and pick STEP (.step or .stp). A few tips that avoid delays:
- Export the part in real-world units (mm or inches) so the size is correct. A part exported at the wrong scale is the most common file problem we see.
- For an assembly, export each unique part, or send the whole thing as a ZIP and tell us the quantities.
- AP214 or AP242 STEP versions both work fine.
How to export a clean DXF
For flat laser-cut parts, export a DXF of the flat pattern. Keep it clean so the laser reads it right:
- Include only the cut lines. Delete construction geometry, dimensions, title blocks, and hatching.
- Make sure every outline is a closed shape with no gaps or double lines.
- Convert text you want engraved into outlines, or call it out separately.
- Export in the units your part is drawn in and tell us if it is mm or inches.
When you also need a drawing
A 3D model shows the shape but not always the intent. Add a simple PDF drawing when your part has tight tolerances, threaded holes, specific finishes, or critical dimensions. It does not have to be fancy. Even a marked-up screenshot that points out the two dimensions that matter saves a round of questions.
No CAD file? No problem
You do not need CAD to work with us. If you have a hand sketch, a photo of a broken part, or a napkin drawing with dimensions, email it to projects@darioo.com and a Darioo engineer will model it for you and send a quote. Turning ideas into finished parts is what we do.
Bottom line: send a STEP file for machined parts, a DXF for flat laser-cut parts, and add a PDF drawing whenever tolerances or threads matter. Not sure? Upload what you have and we will sort it out.
